 'REMEMBERING ARMSTRONG GIBBS'

LUNCHTIME CONCERT,  Saturday 8 May 2010, at St John's Church

As part of the 'Remembering Armstrong Gibbs' weekend, a recital of music for Violin and Piano was given in St John's Church by Robert Atchison and Lara Griffin.

Lara and Robert after their recitalRobert and Lara delighted their audience with pieces by Armstrong Gibbs together with Beethoven's Sonata for Piano and Violin in F Major.

Organised by the Armstrong Gibbs Society, which held its Annual General Meeting immediately before the recital, the weekend of events, concluding with Choral Evensong on Sunday evening, commemorated the 50th anniversary of the composer's death in May 1960.  Armstrong Gibbs lived and worked for much of his life in and around Danbury, where he sang in the church choir.  He is buried in the churchyard, along with his wife.

Robert Atchison has an international reputation as a violinist and conductor and has made a number of recordings, including some of works by Armstrong Gibbs with the London Piano Trio.  He was recently appointed as Artistic Director of the new Gibbs Festival at Danbury.

Lara Griffin is well-known to our congregation at St John's Church, and is a long-term member of the choir as well as an outstanding pianist.  She graduated in 2009 from Trinity College of Music in London, and is now beginning a career in piano technology as a graduate trainee, also at Trinity College.
